This is an animated retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, where the characters are garden gnomes from neighboring yards.

I am one of those rare people who can't stand Romeo and Juliet. I thought that it was mediocre and overrated. But this movie was rather enjoyable. There are enough references to Shakespeare's various works to make spotting them fun and amusing when you notice them (like the address of the two houses where the gnomes live are 2B and 2B with a circle and a slash). In other kids movies there really aren't enough jokes for the adults in the audience, but this one had plenty of jokes that were just for the grown-ups.

And better than the ending for the movie is far better than that of the play. Yeah, I went there. Instead of the two kids killing themselves after a giant misunderstanding, they survive the big fight and everyone still makes up. Ok, sure, you don't want to have the two main characters in a kids' movie die (let's not traumatize the little ones), but I never liked that Romeo and Juliet died in the play. It just seemed so pointless. I liked it much better that the two of them survived and that the war still ended anyway.

This one is worth a check out, even if you don't have a kid to go along with you.
