In 140 AD a young centurion travels through Hadrian's Wall into what is now Scotland to retrieve the standard of his father's legion, and regain his family's honor. Along with him, he takes his personal slave, a man whose father was the chief of their tribe in Briton, and whose whole family was killed during an attack by the Romans.

It seems that this movie was trying to say something big about our current times, but it did it in such a clumsy way that that message may have been lost behind a layer of blood and fight scenes.

At the core of this film, we have two men who are at two diametric sides (not only culturally, but also in their views of life and honor), but through their journey together, they come to a place where they see eye-to-eye. It really seemed as though the writers were trying to convey some sort of large message about different cultures coming together and while still staying true to themselves, also at least understand and respect each other a bit. The problem with the writing, however, is that while these two characters are able to become friends in the end, will all of the blood and over-the-top fighting, many people would probably lose sight of the fact that in the end, the honor of both sides was recognized (and that these two man were able to become friends, despite their differences).

The writing overall could have been a bit better, but the acting was alright (given what they had to work with). Also, the camera work could have been a bit better during the fight scenes. When there was a lot of stuff happening, and a big fight was going on, because of the angle of the camera (and the jerky nature of how stuff was filmed), it was hard to focus or tell what exactly was happening some of the time.

While it was ok, I'd say, don't bother paying full price for it. Watch it on a matinee, or wait for it to show up on DVD.
