Movie: The Mechanic
Starring: Jason Statham and Ben Foster
Opened Nationwide: January 28, 2011
Stars: 3
Jason Statham stars as Arthur Bishop, a hitman who is the best one around at his job (because he can make things look like they were accidents). After being ordered to kill his mentor, he takes on his mentor's son and tries to teach him the "art" of being a hitman.
This film really reminded me of The Transporter (complete with its compulsory "let's have a scene with Jason Statham taking off his shirt for no other reason than to see his chest" scene ... not that I'm complaining) in the way that the events were presented, and the type of character that he was playing. And hell, it was about a million times better than Crank (which was complete divel). And no, I have no issue with the fact that he was in (what is essentially) par for the course for him. He has figured out the kind of flick that people want to see him in, and he's giving the peoples what they want (and I will continue to go to these flicks where I can see him shoot lots of people, and be a general bad-ass).
I was even rather entertained by Ben Foster in this. I've only ever seen him in two other flicks that I can think of off the top of my head (X-Men and The Punisher), and while his character wasn't precisely like either of those, it still has similarities IMO. He seems to have the "broken little boy" thing down pretty well, and in this one (even though his character also had a healthy dose of violent temper) I still found myself wanting to put my arms around him and tell him that everything was going to be alright (which I think may have been what they were going for).
It was a tad predicable, being your standard shoot 'em up "guy" movie, but that isn't to say that it wasn't entertaining (or that I wasn't kept in the story while it was happening).
It's not necessarily something that I would pay full price to go see, but worth a matinee viewing.
