Season of the Witch

Movie: Season of the Witch
Starring: Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman
Opened Nationwide: January 7, 2011
Stars: 1

Season of the Witch is the story of a young girl who is accused (by the church) of being a witch. As a result of the "confession" in which she was "assisted" into giving (by a church representative), she is to be brought to a group of monks to decide her fate. Enlisted to assist in bringing her to the said monks are Behmen (played by Nicolas Cage) and Felson (played by Ron Perlman), who are military deserters during the Crusaides.

I went into this move knowing that it wasn't going to be anything spectacular, but hoping that I would still enjoy it (after all, In the Name of the King was a amazingly horrible fantasy film, packed full of cliches and horrible writing, and I still loved every second of it). Things, however, didn't work out exactly like that.

As with any film that Perlman seems to be in where he isn't wearing some sort of makeup to cover his entire body, he was relegated to the role of loyal sidekick (who ends up getting killed by the end of the film). This, is rather annoying. And what was even more annoying, was that Cage's character had the same feel to it as his character from Windtalkers (where the focus was squarly on his character, when the plot would have been served much better by having it feel more even amongst the other characters (or even just a little bit less about him).

And it would have been so much nicer if the film had stuck to its guns and been more of an alagory about the church and its treatment of women in general (and specifically about those who praticed alternative medicine). Instead, it started to pick up this theme, only to have it desolve into overly cliched fantasy trops, a sidestep of anything that remotely held a mirror up to the insane things people have done in the name of the Holy Mother Church, and trying yet another film to turn Nicolas Cage into looking like he's John Wayne.

The only pluses that I can think of (after coming out of the theater) were that I had a gift certificate that I was able to use for the tilm, and being able to see Robert Sheehan (from the BBC show "Misfits") in something on this side of the Atlantic.

All in all, I'd say to skip it.
