Movie: Soul Surfer
Starring: AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt
Released Nationwide: April 8, 2011
Stars: 2 3/4

Based on the real-life experiences of pro-surfer Bethany Hamilton, who overcame a shark attack (and the loss of her left arm) to realize her dream of becoming a professional surfer.

While I realize that this film was based on someone who is actually alive now, and so, it's going to have many of the events of their own life, as well as much of their attitudes toward life. This being said, I found that the over-abundance of Christianity present in the film to be rather distracting. Yes, many people find strength during hard times when they put faith in a higher power, when they hold fast to the belief that there is a rhyme and a reason for things that happen, even if we can't see those reasons until much later (if we ever see them at all). But not everyone finds that strength in the same place, and to have one faith-based religion weigh so heavily upon the movie may alienate people, where the film makers did not intend to alienate them.

Aside from that slight beef, the film was highly emotional, and will cause you to cry from the point where Bethany is attacked until pretty much the very end. There is a strong message of courage and persiverance that is good for the tweenaged demographic that this film seemed to be aimed at. The fact that this movie was based on someone's real life, and she didn't give up (even when she had ample oportunity to do so) is a very good thing to take out of it (if she can do the impossible, so can others).

And I was actually surprised by just how much I actually liked Dennis Quaid in this film. I have always found that I like his brother quite a bit more than I typically like him, but I found that I really enjoyed him in this ... though that may be because I have a bit of a soft spot for men who are loving and protective of their daughters. It makes me want to snuggle them a bit when they have a good relationship with each other.

It is worth checking this one out, even if you only do it during a matinee.
